Lifesaving Fitness

The Lifesaving Fitness award teaches the importance of physical fitness in lifesaving. Through this award, designed for participants of all ages and both sexes, participants learn how to measure, monitor and maintain personal physical fitness for lifesaving emergencies.

Prerequisites: 30 years of age and under, or medical approval.

Evaluation: All items are evaluated by a Lifesaving Instructor and/or Bronze Examiner. To achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold, candidates must successfully perform all items at that level.

Test items include timed sprints (e.g. 25 m using any stroke; tow a passive victim 50 m with a suitable buoyant device), endurance swims (e.g. 200 m using any stroke), strength (e.g. treading water while holding a 4.5 kg weight; recover a 9 kg weight at 3 m and carry 3 m to pool side) and rescue items (e.g. perform rescue breathing for a period of 3 minutes in deep water).
